We all know that September 1 is the start of dues collection, and every member owes $27 plus any separate club dues, right? Well, not quite. If your club was one of the 17 clubs we chartered last year, the situation is just a little more complex (and maybe even cheaper!). First, if your club chartered in September or April, quit reading and pay your full $27 + club dues. That’s because you paid six months in advance and are already “in sync” with the normal cycle.

Now, instead, lets talk about a club that chartered in June for example, and ignore the “club dues” part for now.

The charter members each paid 6 months in advance … June, July, August, September, October, November. That means each charter member only owes 4 months (December, January, February, March). Since the $27 dues divided by six is $4.50 per month, those charter members owe only $18.00 (4.50 x 4)! Ok, but what about people who joined a chartered club AFTER the initial dues payments went in with the application for charter? Well, they were supposed to pay $4.50/month UP THROUGH September 30. Thus, they owe the full $27.

Too complex? Well, if you wait a few days, your club will receive an invoice from Toastmaster’s Headquarters with the total owed by each member calculated for you. (again ignoring any club dues, since that is unknown to headquarters). If your club does not get its invoice before September 15, CALL headquarters and get the invoice resent.

Suggestion: To get credit on your Distinguished Club Program (DCP) for “Dues paid on time” go ahead right now and pay the dues for at least six members. Then you can send in the rest when you get the invoice and people write checks for the correct amount.

One last time about Newly Chartered Clubs: Charter members owe $4.50 per month for any months that remain unpaid in the October to March period after subtracting the months already paid by the initial six months in advance charter membership payment. (Oh, where do you find the charter date? … Go to Toastmasters.org, log in, and use “FIND A CLUB ==> Advanced Find” to allow you to search using your club number or name. The result will list your charter date along with the other information.)

When a new club is formed, Toastmasters International cuts a “Club Charter” document with the International President’s signature and an individual “Charter Member” certificate for each of the 20+ members who signed up when the application was submitted. Those documents are then returned to the District Governor who was in office when the club’s application was completed at World Headquarters. At that point, the District Governor and the new Club’s officers schedule a special meeting and celebration at which the District Governor presents the club with the framed charter and hands out the charter member certificates to each of the members, along with a small gift to the club such as an Educational Module Series or Timing lights. That’s the Charter Party for the club, and the meeting usually ends with refreshments and perhaps a cake.

With all the 17 clubs chartered last year, and six already this year, you can bet that the party schedule is going to remain hectic for John Lesko and Paul White! Just to give you some flavor for the occasions, check out the photos here of the Charter Party for NEW Corporation located in Sterling, Virginia.

John Lesko, DTM, the Immediate Past District Governor of District 27 (IPDG) also took the occasion to formally install the new club officers for the NEW Corp. club. The next photo shows Kelly Shaw, President, holding the gavel, the symbol of her authority in the club.

The ceremony was attended by John Lesko (IPDG), Nancy Malthouse, (IPLGM), Mike Kerr (PRO and Club Mentor), and Bill Malthouse (LGM) in addition to the members from the new club. Second mentor, Cynthia Miller, was unable to attend due to a schedule conflict. Mike also served as General Evaluator for the club meeting which preceded the chartering ceremony.

Bill Malthouse, Lieutenant Governor Marketing shot these pictures, and hence does not appear in any of them, including the gallery of additional photos now in the mail to Kelly Shaw for club use. Nancy Malthouse, the immediate past LGM and Bill both were instrumental in chartering the club and enjoyed visiting them in this moment of their “birth” as a Toastmasters Club.

As we said at the start of this article, there are many more charter parties in the pipeline, and some others have already been completed, but Let It Shine articles should not go on and on and on, so please view this party as only an example of what can and does happen at all the others!

At Twitter, District 57 called attention to the Beloit College Mindset List for the class of 2014. It’s a timely reminder that marketing materials meant to appeal to a younger audience can go out of date quickly. If you’re not careful, you can wind up driving your audience away instead of attracting it. Here’s a sample from an article in ParentDish:

For students entering college this fall, e-mail is too slow, phones have never had cords and the computers they played with as kids are now in museums.

The Class of 2014 thinks of Clint Eastwood more as a sensitive director than as Dirty Harry urging punks to “go ahead, make my day.” Few incoming freshmen know how to write in cursive or have ever worn a wristwatch.

These are among the 75 items on this year’s Beloit College Mindset List. The compilation, released Tuesday, is assembled each year by two officials at this private school of about 1,400 students in Beloit, Wis.

The list is meant to remind teachers that cultural references familiar to them might draw blank stares from college freshmen born mostly in 1992.

Of course, it can also have the unintended consequence of making people feel old.
