We all know that September 1 is the start of dues collection, and every member owes $27 plus any separate club dues, right?  Well, not quite.  If your club was one of the 17 clubs we chartered last year, the situation is just a little more complex (and maybe even cheaper!). First, if your club chartered in September or April, quit reading and pay your full $27 + club dues.  That’s because you paid six months in advance and are already “in sync” with the normal cycle.

Now, instead, lets talk about a club that chartered in June for example, and ignore the “club dues” part for now.

The charter members each paid 6 months in advance … June, July, August, September, October, November.  That means each charter member only owes 4 months (December, January, February, March).  Since the $27 dues divided by six is $4.50 per month, those charter members owe only $18.00 (4.50 x 4)!  Ok, but what about people who joined a chartered club AFTER the initial dues payments went in with the application for charter?  Well, they were supposed to pay $4.50/month UP THROUGH September 30.  Thus, they owe the full $27.

Too complex?  Well, if you wait a few days, your club will receive an invoice from Toastmaster’s Headquarters with the total owed by each member calculated for you. (again ignoring any club dues, since that is unknown to headquarters).  If your club does not get its invoice before September 15, CALL headquarters and get the invoice resent.

Suggestion:  To get credit on your Distinguished Club Program (DCP) for “Dues paid on time” go ahead right now and pay the dues for at least six members.  Then you can send in the rest when you get the invoice and people write checks for the correct amount.

One last time about Newly Chartered Clubs:  Charter members owe $4.50 per month for any months that remain unpaid in the October to March period after subtracting the months already paid by the initial six months in advance charter membership payment.  (Oh, where do you find the charter date? … Go to Toastmasters.org, log in, and use “FIND A CLUB ==> Advanced Find” to allow you to search using your club number or name.  The result will list your charter date along with the other information.)

A Different Kind of Speech Contest

by Mo Hamilton on 31 August 2010

in Uncategorized

This seems sure to be quirky, but it might be interesting and entertaining—in case of rain, the contest will be held in an Irish bar—a speech contest at which you can hear the outrageous blasphemy and rhetoric of [an] undeservedly forgotten American orator. Follow this link to learn more about the second annual contest to revive the memory of Robert G. Ingersoll…famous 19th century orator and outspoken critic of religion.
